CDLC Fellows
Selection and Renewal Process Information

A Fellow is any individual actively involved in diverse language communities. Fellows may include faculty, staff, community members, or students.

Active Fellows Rights and Responsibilities

• Rights:

o Add “Fellow, CDLC” to contact information
o Be inducted and have access to the directory of Fellows
o Consult with the Leadership Team
o Vote at meetings
o Nominate and vote for candidates to Leadership Team
o Be eligible to serve on Leadership Team
o Be eligible to serve on or chair CDLC committees/task-forces
o Sponsor no more than two Fellowship candidates per year

Responsibilities:

o Values: Fellows uphold the CDLC mission and contribute to its goals
o Engagement: Fellows work with other CDLC members, as well as organizations outside CDLC, to support activities such as:

 Design and implement research agendas and educational projects to address the sociocultural wellbeing of DLC stakeholders
 Create and strengthen partnerships with and among DLC stakeholder groups
 Engage in outreach efforts to promote the interests of DLC individuals and groups

o Attendance: Be present at least one general meeting per semester
o Sponsorship: Nominate at least one new Fellow per year (recommended)

Categories of Fellows**:

o Regular Fellow: Individuals that meet Primary Selection Criteria (see Selection Committee section above)
o Emeritus Fellow: Fellows who have retired from full-time employment and have notified the Leadership of their interest in the Emeritus Fellow membership

Terms:

o Terms are for one year. Fellows are renewed annually, if in good standing.
o Letters are sent annually to renew active status. Copies are also sent to Fellow’s chair/supervisor/advisor
o If requested and approved, membership as a Fellow can be placed on hold for the duration specified
o If an inactive Fellow seeks to be active again, then the individual can submit a petition that requests to be reinstituted

Application

• Nomination by one current Fellow
• Submission of CDLC Fellow Application (please see form on back)
• Curriculum Vitae (submit with application)
• Other criteria:

o Nominee may apply if applied in previous year(s)
o No particular credential or degree is required for consideration
o Sponsor(s) need not be from the same field/area as nominee

• Deadlines for application submission
• Fall Semester: end of October (Appointment to begin in December of the current academic year.)
• Spring Semester: end of February (Appointment to begin in April of the current academic year.)

Selection Committee

• Members of the Leadership Team and one appointed Fellow

o Sponsors may serve on selection committee but must recuse themselves from voting on their respective nominees

• Committee charge:

o Disseminate information about Fellowship
o Report about the selection process
o Confer with sponsor regarding applicant’s commitment to CDLC mission and potential contributions
o Review and select new Fellows

• Primary selection criteria:

o Information provided in the application, in addition to other relevant information, is considered by selection committee
o A cogent narrative that is consistent with CV and CDLC mission, including:

 Reason(s) for wanting to serve as a CDLC Fellow
 Commitment to the mission of CDLC
 Potential contributions to CDLC

• Other criteria:

o No yearly cap on number of Fellows selected
o A candidate for Fellowship shall be selected by an affirmative vote of a majority of selection committee members

Sponsors

• Current Fellows may only sponsor two individuals per year
• Responsibilities:

o Only nominate individuals whose work represents the mission of CDLC
o Submit paragraph via email or other means, including:

 Name and contact information of nominee
 Capacity in which sponsor has known nominee
 How long sponsor has known nominee
 Description of how nominee’s work fits with CDLC mission

o Work collaboratively with nominee to assure completeness of application


**As a one-time occurrence, and as we commence the practice of formalizing CDLC Fellows, members who have founded CDLC and/or been active in the life of the Coalition for the past few years, are eligible to become Fellows or Emeritus Fellows without the need to submit an application.
